Research into heredity and diseases is no longer possible without programmers. If you are wondering how you can apply IT and biology skills to lifelike problems in health and disease, then the unique Advanced Bachelor of Bioinformatics in Bruges is something for you!
Bioinformatics is a new and spectacular field which uses methods from informatics to store and process molecular biological information (DNA, proteins, functions). In bioinformatics, molecular biology is combined with informatics and programming. Bioinformatics scientists are capable of retrieving the necessary information from databases and using these to make predictions. As a bioinformatician you will look for application possibilities of informatics within biological/biomedical laboratories.
- Informatics scientist: application of informatics techniques to storage, organising and sharing (molecular biological) data
- Bioinformatics scientist: data processing and (statistical) analysis by means of bioinformatics tools in a dry lab
- Programmer: integration by scripting and automation of bioinformatics tools
In the course of the Bioinformatics programme, 3 roles are covered: the role of programmer, the role of informatics scientist and the role of bioinformatics scientist. You learn several programming languages like PHP, Python and R, and you use the most relevant databases from which you learn to process and interpret data. During the programme there is a special emphasis on the application of open source tools, both in a Windows and in a Linux environment. During the traineeship (without a bachelor’s thesis) a fourth role is addressed, that of the new young professional, in which the more generic competencies of a bachelor’s training (such as working in team, clear communication, …) are pursued.
As the training progresses, you become more and more familiar with the processing of complex biological data, like the analysis of next generation sequencing data (NGS data) or the application of machine learning techniques and you are able to apply these within a professional framework.
Job Opportunities
Thanks to the increasing use of informatics in life sciences, the field of bioinformatics more and more comes to the forefront. Bioinformatics scientists are needed both in the private sector and in research laboratories of universities and their spin-offs (such as Flanders Institute for Biotechnology (VIB)). Researchers really need the bioinformatics scientist/technicians to make the link between informatics and molecular biology.
A bioinformatics scientist is a polyvalent staff member who can be employed in a very wide range of functions within scientific research, both in the private sector and in academic research centers. He is the key person for the processing of experimental data, the generation of ab initio data by means of existing models. This can be about evolution theory, comparative genome analyses, the improvement in predicting genetic conditions, the follow-up and maintenance of databases. In summary, a bioinformatics scientist is the perfect blend between the ICT expert and the molecular biologist!
Sustainable Energy Management, your stepping stone to sustainable businesses!
Are you fascinated by themes such as sustainability and the energy transition? The bachelor-after-bachelor Sustainable Energy Management focuses on the young potential who, by using technology in a sustainable way, can support companies or organizations on their path to energy transition, CO2 neutrality and reducing the ecological footprint. In addition to the technological solution, business implementation is also very important.
Put your energy into energy
What’s in a name? Yep, the focus of the banaba Sustainable Energy Management (SEM) is on sustainability and energy transition. You will be introduced to existing and innovative technologies. Based on a detailed energy plan, you will learn how creative, smart solutions and energy efficiency can lead to energy savings. As a result, you will achieve the predefined KPIs. The latest trends in energy generation and the matching of supply and demand are also spearheads of this course. SEM could be described as looking for ways to implement energy optimizations, but that definition is a bit too narrow. Therefore, this course is built around four pillars.
- In the first three pillars: Energy, Technology and Business, you will get a better view on many facets of today’s energy challenges.
- In pillar four, the first three pillars come together in the form of project work in cooperation with industry. Here you apply the acquired knowledge to concrete cases of companies. This forms the practical component that we at Howest are so strong in.
Practical and future-proof
No course responds more to society’s future needs than Sustainable Energy Management. You learn how we can all make do with less energy, but also follow the energy transition from the front row. This includes becoming an expert in the conversion from traditional energy sources such as oil and gas to renewable energy sources. We take you into the world of smart grids, smart buildings, HVAC, energy management systems and more. However, theory alone will not solve the many energy issues. That’s why we put them into practice during projects with industry or practice sessions in our energy lab.
With this banaba you test initiatives against the company’s energy plan. This both economically and technologically. This requires knowledge about the calculation of payback periods in various scenarios. Not only the savings are calculated, but also what this means if the proposal is rolled out. The impact of the proposed optimizations on the formulated emission and energy targets is also included in the calculation. In addition to the economic and ecological calculation, it is also important to work in a planned manner to inform the various stakeholders in order to arrive at a supported decision. By means of clear, targeted communication, both in a global energy plan and in individual initiatives, you inform stakeholders of the savings potential.
Job Opportunities
More and more employers are recognizing the added value of an energy expert in developing the energy plan.
After all, the number of job offers continues to grow faster each year than professionals are graduating.
- As a sustainable energy manager, you help (manufacturing) companies keep their energy bills as low as possible,
- You can also advise SMEs as an external energy consultant or auditor.

- With energy providers, you can also work at the source.
- Is entrepreneurship in your blood? Private individuals, companies, engineering and architectural firms: they all hire independent energy consultants.

As a business economist, the numbers are important. Not just accounting, maths and statistics, but also the analytical and empirical skills needed to assess risks, calculate the future value of assets or identify potential trends in time. We’ll teach you to think and act as an economist, by studying what determines the trade balance of countries, how the money supply influences inflation, how governments regulate monopolies and why all this matters for business, learning about the importance of trust between buyers and sellers in second-hand markets and by understanding whether a company that is the only supplier in a market is eager to innovate.
You’ll start with economic concepts, theories and models in the first year, digging deeper in years two and three, with intermediate and advanced courses on macroeconomics, microeconomics, public finance, and international monetary economics. But don’t worry, you won’t be overwhelmed by theory! Other courses put new concepts to the test. Marketing, management, corporate finance, business law, and strategic brand management are just some of the applied courses that will help you manage a firm or even set up your own company. And we don’t stop there. People skills are so important. Especially if you dream of a career as a manager. So, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to develop these and interact with other students.
Last but not least: there’s language. In a globalised economy being proficient in English, the language of international business, is indispensable. You’ll have that competitive advantage, since the Business Economics programme is taught entirely in English. And of course you’ll have the chance to practice your language and other skills during 1 or 2 semesters abroad in the Erasmus international student exchange programme.
You’ll share the classroom with your fellow students for the first two years. In the third year, you’ll choose between one of two specialisations: International Business or Business & Technology. International Business offers advanced courses on business, economics and social entrepreneurship. Business & Technology adds technological entrepreneurship, advanced mathematics, and information technology to the mix.

The MA programme is a one-year, full-time arts education program. Its goal is to build the profile of an independent and professional animation filmmaker whose understanding of contemporary cinema culture is based on a strong sense of aesthetics and ethics. The individual practice is the point of reference throughout the program and leads to a master project that includes both a single-screen film work and a written essay.
Master project and master thesis
For your MA degree, you formulate your final project and develop it through to completion. In this way, you prove that you are ready to be a critical and innovative animation filmmaker. Our students often participate in international Animation film festivals. It is an important networking opportunity for our master students.
Your MA project is central to the programme. You choose a topic, a research question and an objective. Under personal guidance, you not only realise an artistic project but also write a thesis in which you reflect upon your practice, methodology and ideas.
Studio & critical practice
The MA atelier provides a platform for discussing your work during one-to-one meetings with your tutors and in group discussions with and presentations to fellow students. Moreover, through guest lectures, study trips and portfolio viewings you’ll come in contact with experts in the various aspects of your specialisation. In this way, you raise your practice to a professional artistic standard. Meanwhile, you’ll continue to feed your theoretical knowledge. Via intensive, small-scale seminars and public lectures, you’ll be exposed to contemporary critical thinking about film and audiovisual culture and learn how to link theory with practice. You’ll graduate with an audiovisual work, which you’ll present to an external jury.
In preparation for your MA project, you’ll follow a three-day MA Session during which special attention is paid to the (un)truthful aspect of storytelling. In this Critical Practice, you’ll reflect on the extent to which a balance can be achieved between truth and lies. During workshops, you’ll explore how these aspects can enrich your own MA project.
Seminars
Seminars are an integral part of the master’s program. We have a particularly rich and diversified range of research seminars fed by the research groups of our campuses. Each campus has its own researchers, research traditions and disciplines.
Together with your coordinator, you will select two seminars that match your ambitions. You can also choose from the courses given or its associated university colleges.
In the master Graphic Storytelling you learn to develop your graphic and narrative skills. This makes it unique in Belgium.
During the master in Graphic Storytelling, you prove your masterships as a graphic storyteller or autonomous illustrator. Not only fiction but also non-fiction is on the program: documentary, autobiography, reportage etc.
You will expand your technical drawing capacities and learn to work with new technologies in both print and digital media.
You will practice storytelling techniques to tell your own story in a personal way.
As a MA student, you’ll choose your own project and formulate your own relevant research questions. You’ll demonstrate that you are able to work critically and innovatively within your chosen discipline or able to initiate multidisciplinary projects. You’ll work in a productive and stimulating environment in which confrontation and communication with other students and tutors are the driving force for deepening your own work.
About the MA Training
The open, questioning attitude you take as a designer/author towards available media ensures that the switch between techniques and disciplines becomes a matter of course. In other words: the autonomous designer/author sometimes makes video, sometimes conceptual work, then a book or a digital project. In addition, you’ll write a thesis in which you reflect on your practice, methodology and the choices you make. Alongside design, you’ll focus on an ongoing critical analysis of your work process through academic writing and presentations.
A critical design attitude
During the Critical Practices and interdisciplinary Critical Study you’ll learn research methodologies and collect, analyse and synthesise relevant information to answer your research questions. This will bring you insight into the manner in which designers operate in different geographical, historical and cultural contexts and will give you the necessary intellectual capacity to grow into the next generation of leading designers, authors and artists.
The Master graduate project
For your master graduate project, you choose your own artistic project. You realize this work and present it to a jury of internal and external experts during a public presentation. You contextualize your work with a thesis with which you situate your work within or against existing literature and debates. This proves that you can orient yourself within the field of the chosen artistic discipline.
For your master’s thesis, you can make use of technical support and productional assistance and you rely on the advice of the tutors. Nevertheless, with your master’s thesis, you prove that you work to a large extent independently.

The MA program in Filmmaking offers a one-year, full-time arts education program. Its goal is to build the profile of an independent and professional film maker/artist whose understanding of contemporary cinema culture is informed by a strong sense of aesthetics and ethics. The student’s individual practice is the basic point of reference throughout the program and leads to the graduation project that includes both an audiovisual work and a written essay.
The program puts great emphasis on the interaction between the school’s input and the student’s contribution. It builds on skills gathered in a Film or Audio-visual Arts Bachelor Program and offers no specific training anymore in terms of acting directing, lighting, editing, script writing and so forth. Within the broad framework of cinema (including arthouse film, artist’s film, diverse documentary practices and non-generic mainstream moviemaking) it offers instead a continuous program of mandatory activities that includes workshops, seminars, lectures, presentations by visiting filmmakers and visual artists, group presentations, group discussions, film screenings and excursions to exhibitions that offer a wide range of ideas and positions from the contemporary field of cinema culture and audio-visual arts.
Students contribute their own knowledge, sensitivities, skills, aspirations, motivation and commitment. In regular peer to peer meetings, they report and communicate with each other on the progress of their graduation project. By using this input and through ongoing dialogue with tutors, lecturers and fellow students, they develop a critical vocabulary and learn to formulate adequate artistic research questions and responses as well as to reach solutions independently, culminating in the showing of a personal and creative finished audio-visual work where they demonstrate a personal signature as well as the mastering of directing skills.
The program is designed to take a closer look at the problems and possibilities that arise when students/future filmmakers develop a work of art. It does not discriminate between narrative or documentary or experimental cinema practices. On the contrary, it helps students position themselves in the film practice(s) of their choice and achieve their artistic intentions by understanding the achievements of others. It lets students understand the strategies and tactics as well as knowledge and skills involved in the production of audio-visual artwork. Individual practice is at its very centre: a continuous and independent working pattern that seeks a dialogue with similar as well as different practices. In this process, the students can rely on a dialogue about the work’s practical and technical dimensions as well as about content matter with personal tutors.
It stimulates interaction with the departments on our campus.
Students research film and animation cultures as well as visual arts and media histories, and their socio-historical contexts. They develop writing and speaking skills that enable them to express themselves in a critical and nuanced way about their own and other people’s works. The sharpening of cultural knowledge and sensibilities is geared towards the students’ film practices within a research framework that favours the complementarity of classroom and film set, of theory and practice, of thinking and doing.

In preparation for the master exhibition – which you organise together with fellow students off-campus – you will show your work to a wider public in an intermediate exhibition at the Recyclart art centre in Brussels.
During this process curiosity, independent initiative and a passion for experimentation will drive your artistic inquiry. You’ll discover new strategies and unique methods. By openly communicating about evolutions and doubts during your work process, you’ll bring your projects to a successful conclusion.
Alongside these theoretical seminars and seminars, you will also visit exhibitions and take part in workshops. Through portfolio viewings with nationally and internationally recognised artists, art critics and curators you’ll discover new perspectives.

The individual development of an artistic position, based on a permanent process of critical reflection, is a crucial element in contemporary art. In order to become a ʻprofessionalʼ artist, students need to learn to position themselves critically. This is the core of the Fine Arts master program.
The Fine Arts Master program at Brussels represents a wide range of artistic possibilities. As a student you are free to develop your artistic ideas within the various disciplines of contemporary art: there are no restrictions in terms of medium or technique. All technical facilities on campus are at your disposal. The only imperative is the imperative of art. In practice this implies a focus on visual and conceptual finesse, productive self-questioning, and an imaginative approach to research. The student’s artistic intuition is not banned from the workfloor, but it may be critically dissected – out of respect rather than mistrust. Our group forms an international micro-community inside the school and, more broadly, inside the city; individual work is done in close contact with others. Student output will be framed and reframed by peers, directly and indirectly, using impulses generated in group discussions, theory seminars, guest lectures, workshops and excursions. The flourishing contemporary art scene in Brussels will act both as sounding board and medium of reception.
The master graduate project
The Fine Arts MA programme at LUCA is aimed at critical self-reflection. Throughout the year students develop their master project in the context of theoretical and practice-related input. Through regular group evaluations and presentations, the students develop their practice to a professional level and learn to express themselves verbally to their peers, tutors and finally to an external jury.
Each student works with an individual tutor and a thesis promoter, assigned to him/her at the beginning of the academic year. Students are expected to regularly consult them and to report about the progress of their work. The thesis is regarded as an integral part of the student’s MA project.

This Master’s degree program in Textile Design is open to students interested in exploring the artistic value and versatility of the textile medium. Within the broad range of design and visual arts, emphasis lies on the artistic process in which experimentation, innovative thinking and critical reflection play a key role. In this Master’s degree students become autonomous artists/designers.
More specifically, students will be asked to develop a personal Master’s project within the multifaceted field of textile art and design. Supervisors and teachers help students to determine their artistic position in relation to the tradition and topicality of textile design. To support the student’s research, staff and fellow students give feedback during the Master’s sessions and students have the possibility to choose out of a wide range of theoretical seminars to broaden their knowledge. Finally, the Master’s thesis offers students the opportunity to focus more reflectively on aspects they find important as artists/designers.

Masters’ sessions strengthen your critical-reflective outlook
During the masters’ sessions, you will study the artistic praxis of the other master’s students. You work together in heterogeneously composed groups and meet students from different specializations. During weekly meetings, you discuss each other’s artistic practice through discussions, interviews, group debates and guided tours. You and your fellow students take the lead in the sessions. During this process, the two accompanying teachers act as moderator. In this way, the sessions evolve from a series of artist’s talks into an open platform about contemporary art: everything can be discussed, but nothing is without obligation.
In our master’s programme Conducting you’ll learn how to conduct a choir, wind band or symphonic orchestra. A solid technical basis, a professional insight into performance practice and interpretation form the basis of your program, together with a broad literature overview,. You’ll learn to rehearse efficiently in a pedagogical and methodical way, partly through practice-oriented analyses of works and performances.
The master’s thesis
The master’s thesis consists of two self-selected artistic projects: a recital and a research-based recital. You present both recitals to a jury of internal and external experts during a public presentation. You substantiate and contextualise it with a thesis that situates your work within or against existing literature and debates. With this, you prove that you can orient yourself within the field of your artistic discipline. With your master’s thesis, you prove that you work largely independently. From your first master’s year onwards, you work on your research project with support from your main subject teacher and thesis supervisor.
During the master years, students can choose from a number of instrument or more theoretically oriented courses. In this way, they can continue their personal development.
In addition, students are familiarized with processing information and the development of new ways of thinking. Thus, they come to reflect on their own music practice, resulting in a thesis as part of the integrated master project (lecture/performance).
Central to this specialisation are lessons in the main instrument and in ensemble. To guarantee an optimal learning experience, these are linked as much as possible. All the skills acquired during instrument lessons are actively applied in various ensembles. Classic training techniques dovetail directly with this. Concerts are regularly organised.
This broad, multifaceted training offers many perspectives in different work environments. Tutors are prominent jazz musicians who are not only active on the jazz scene but also composing, arranging, producing.
If you are not yet sure of your own profile, our teachers and programme counsellors will help you discover it. Once you have chosen a specific profile, you can still set your own emphases. After all, from year to year, you compose a large part of your individual study programme.

The Postgraduate in Global Business Management is a modular programme. All modules concern business management topics, covering different kinds of expertise in a global context. During the autumn semester, emphasis will be on lectures as well as on learning-by-doing. The spring semester is more project based. Students will work on different projects, mostly in international teams.
The aim is to integrate foreign students with Belgian students and stimulate teamwork, international communication and co-operation. During the semesters company visits are organized, so that students will also learn about Belgian corporate culture.
